Chemicals Found In Baby Formula

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical compound containing two phenol functional groups, belonging to the phenol class of aromatic organic compounds. It is widely prepared and sold, and various important polymers/plastics are made from it.

Bill Walker represents the "Environmental Working Group," which conducted the study. "It's a neurotoxin, meaning it can damage the developing brain, which scientists are still doing a lot of research about. The research does indicate that there are concerns with it," says Walker.

However, a researcher for the International Formula Council told ABC7 that the science doesn't support the fears about BPA, which is usually studied on mice.

"It is well established that humans metabolize and excrete BPA much faster than animals. Therefore, the results can not be extrapolated to humans," says Haley Stevens, PhD., International Formula Council.

A spokesperson for the Food and Drug Administration told ABC7 that its chemists have found no evidence of BPA harming young children in small doses.

At this point, the FDA plans no ban or limitations on the use of BPA in formula cans.

The moms we talked with are understandably concerned about this latest formula scare, but they're also frustrated these warnings about food and toys keep coming out, long after their kids have been exposed to the products.

"It's crazy. I kind of feel like it's yet another thing in the list of stuff that's supposed to hurt our kids," says Meredith Friedman, mother.

Scientists say it may take another ten years of research to fully understand how BPA might effect babies, if at all.
