Natural Hand Cream - Product Comparison
Posted on 19 August 2015
For me, it wasn't until the cold dry winter weather started to wreak havoc on my hands, that I realised that I needed to start using a natural hand cream. Exposure to air conditioning, overly hot showers and gardening without gloves on (yes, I confess to doing that one) can all contribute to dry, wrinkly or even cracked skin on the hands. For many people regular hand washing means that hand creams may be removed before they have enough time to take effect, so frequent application of a natural hand cream may be required.
Here I have compared some of our most popular hand creams here at Down To Earth Organics, each is listed and reviewed in no particular order:
Weleda Skin Food has a generation of use by gardeners, mechanics and housewives and is a popular winter remedy for dry skin. Made in Germany, Weleda Skin Food has been designed specifically for dry or cracked skin, a base of natural beeswax and lanolin make this natural hand cream super hydrating. The addition of nourishing oils and calendula make this a perfect option for those with quite damaged skin and cracks. Personally I find this cream a little rich for my skin, I have seen others swooning over the rich luxury of this cream, but for me this is just far too much for my skin to handle.
Antipodes Deliverance Hand Cream I have used on and off since we introduced the Antipodes range into our store several years ago. I am fond of the elegant combination of sweet orange and cedarwood essential oils in this product, and a balance of avocado and macadamia oil, although sounding a bit rich, is actually really quite nourishing without being too oily. I find when I use the Antipodes Deliverance Hand Cream my hands end up being a perfect candidate for one of those classic 'before and after' product pictures. I find that this natural hand cream soaks in nicely and doesn’t leave an oily residue on my skin. A bit more pricey than some other products, but for me, well worth the expense.
The Jojoba Company Lemon & Coconut Hand Cream is a surprising favourite of mine. I have only recently tried this product, although it has been sitting quietly waiting for me to indulge in some of its moisturising goodness. Definitely a good rich winter hand cream, The Jojoba Company Lemon & Coconut Hand Cream leaves my hands visibly more hydrated and I find that my skin will stay like this for some time after application. Reasonably priced for a quality product and presented nicely, this natural hand cream wins additional points for presentation too – a good gift for someone special.
Alba Botanica Hawaiian Hand & Body Lotion is one of our best selling natural moisturisers at Down To Earth Organics. The generous nearly 200g of tube makes this the most economical of the six natural hand creams in this review. Doubling as a body lotion, Alba Botanica Hawaiian Hand & Body Lotion is enriched with shea butter and cocoa butter, this natural hand cream is definitely nourishing and hydrating. This product has a really fine texture and would be perfect if you are travelling and needing a good all over body and hand lotion, however, for me, the addition of some not-so-natural ingredients and fragrances does not win points for me.
Antipodes Jubilation Hand & Body Cream is one of the more recent additions to the Antipodes range of products, actually they have recently released three new hand and body creams in the last few years – the Jubilation is the most popular in our store. Although I am generally a fan of all things Antipodes Scientific Organic, the Jubilation Hand & Body Cream is not one of my favourites. I have overheard many people commenting on the lovely fragrance of this product, however, for me I feel that Antipodes has deviated from their usual natural essential oil base of ingredients and included some very strong fragrance oils into this formula. While the texture of the product is pleasant and quite light, the smell is pure overwhelming headache fodder for me.
A'kin Unscented Body Moisturiser has been around for quite a few years and we often suggest this product for people that are very sensitive to chemicals or fragrances. As with all A'kin products, they have full disclosure of ingredients on their label, this product is unscented and perfect for fragrance free skin care. Although technically more of a body moisturiser, the texture of this product lends itself well to being used exclusively on the hands or also on dry skin on the legs and body. The ample 200mL tube makes it more suited to those on a budget, this unscented moisturiser is also suitable for men who prefer to not wear fragrance on their skin. Not quite as rich as The Jojoba Company Hand Cream (and certainly not nearly as rich as Weleda Skin Food), but none the less rich enough to combat dry winter skin.
Additional tips for keeping your hands lovingly nourished in the winter weather:
- wear gloves or mittens to protect your fingers if you are travelling in the cold early morning weather.
- keep well hydrated with herbal teas, miso soup or simple warm water to hydrate your skin from the inside.
- ensure that you consume adequate amounts of quality oily foods such as fish, nuts, seeds and avocados.
- consider keeping warm with additional layers of clothing rather than drying heaters and air conditioners.
